  7.     Right about now LARRY GONICK is somewhere in India during
  8. the 2nd century B.C. "That's the beginning of consciousness
  9. tripping as we know it," he says. Actually he's in San
  10. Francisco, toiling over his multivolume Cartoon History of the
  11. Universe -- the first book was published last month -- and
  12. should be up to the present by 1996 or so. A math grad from
  13. Harvard, Gonick, 44, is a cartoonist who takes history
  14. seriously, dividing his time between the library stacks and the
  15. drawing board. If there's one place he wishes he had lived in
  16. it's ancient Athens, whose democracy-loving citizens made it
  17. "the Boston of Greece."
